Fermín López has ignited fresh debate in Spanish football after delivering a blunt message about the rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, insisting that true fans cannot support both sides.
Speaking during Spain’s training camp in an interview with El Mundo, the young midfielder reflected on his journey and deep emotional connection to Barcelona. “I’ve been a Barça fan for as long as I can remember,” he said, recalling how the club attempted to sign him twice during his childhood before he eventually joined permanently as a teenager.
But it was his comments on the historic rivalry that drew the most attention. “If you’re a Barça fan, you can’t like Real Madrid. And vice versa. Supporting both clubs is impossible if you truly live football,” Fermín stated, reinforcing the intensity of one of the sport’s most iconic rivalries.
On the pitch, the midfielder continues to grow under the guidance of Hansi Flick at Barcelona and Luis de la Fuente with the Spain national team. Despite slight tactical differences, he emphasized that both coaches demand similar qualities from him, including movement between lines, attacking presence, and composure in possession.
Looking ahead, Fermín López made it clear that the FIFA World Cup remains a major personal goal. However, he urged caution when it comes to expectations around Spain’s chances. “We have an incredible team and, of course, we can win. But I don’t like being labeled as favorites. When you believe that too much, you risk relaxing,” he warned.
As the season enters its decisive phase, Fermín’s performances and outspoken personality continue to position him as one of the emerging voices—and talents—within both Barcelona and Spanish football.
